Understated Muscle
If you’ve been looking for a nice Chevy Nova as a hobby car recently you probably have noticed that they are being bought up as fast as they are advertised. We can’t keep them in our listings and hobby car dealers can’t keep them on their lots. For many years they have been available in reasonable price ranges, much less expensive to own than Chevelles or Camaros. But their time has come. Collectors are buying them up because they expect them to escalate in value.
This week a sharp Autumn Gold 1970 Chevrolet Nova SS L78 was listed for sale by Fastlane Motorsports & Classic Cars out of Addison, Illinois. Now that is a rare find. They say it is mostly original with a numbers matching big block 396 ci V8 putting out 375 horses from the factory. Chevrolet only produced 3,765 of these L78 Novas so they are more rare than the Chevelle version of the L78. 1970 was the last year Chevrolet offered the big block L78 motor. The Gold Nova also came with a numbers matching 12-bolt rear end and front disc brakes.
Fastlane Motorsports tells us the last owner had if for 48 years, and had the front end and undercarriage refurbished with new bushings and new steering components. There were some upgrades that have been done, including long tube headers, Lakewood Bellhousing, 4-speed manual T10 Borg Warner transmission with Hurst shifter and leaf spring traction bars. Check the panel fitment when you view this interesting walk-around video.
Chevy Novas were mostly thought of as 6 cylinder economy cars back in 1970. They sold 173,632 Novas with 6 cylinder motors that year. But with Vince Piggins as manager of product performance at Chevrolet, it was a given that somebody would pack a big block V8 into the Nova, and Chevrolet went along with it. These are so rare that you should take a good look at this one. It may be a while before another one comes along.

Choose Best Car Show
USA Today is currently running a poll for car collectors to choose the 10 Best Car Shows in the country. The poll is open to the public and our COL newsletter readers are welcome to voice their opinion. They list 20 of what they consider to be the best car show venues in the country. Assuredly, they have many of the best car shows on that list (but not all, i.e. the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Festival is not included.) You can vote once a day for one show. Follow this link to see the Best Car Show Nominees. Then click the “Explore and Vote” tag on your favorite. It will take you to a page of information on that show. Below the story is a blue button that says “Vote.” Click there to make your vote count. Currently Cruisin’ The Coast in Mississippi is in first place. The winners will be announced on April 10, 2023.
Spring Carlisle Auction
A super rare 1956 Lincoln Premiere Convertible showed up in our New Listings this week. It was listed as a promotion for the Spring Carlisle Auction coming up April 20-21, 2023 during the big Spring Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Lincoln’s luxury car was second only to the Mark II for two years, 1956 and 1957, and was produced until 1960. Only 2,447 convertibles were built that first year. Click through to look at the photos. This car is very straight and nice. What an elegant example. We have not seen one like this ever. It will cross the auction stage at the Spring Carlisle Auction facility next month.

1959 Pontiac Catalina
Here is one you don’t see very often. It is a 1959 Pontiac Catalina Convertible with the 389 and a tripower. It has undergone a frame-off restoration with incredible attention to detail. Take a look at the photos at the link to see it in high resolution. They say the ebony black finish is mirror quality, and it shows in the photos. Power is put to the ground through a Hydromatic 4-speed automatic transmission to the rear end with 3.00 gears. They say it not only looks and drives great, but it comes loaded with options, including air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power windows, and a power convertible top. Click here to view an interesting walk-around video and ride with Greg on a test drive.
Amphicar 770
One of the true oddities of automotive history happened when a German engineer convinced The Quandt Group in Germany to produce an amphibious automobile that would drive on land and slide right into the water and drive as well on the water surface. This beautifully restored 1965 Amphicar 770 was listed for sale by Ellingson Motorcars in Rogers, Minnesota. It has the Austin 4 cylinder 1147 cc motor and a Hermes Land/Sea 4-speed manual transmission. The odometer reads 23,762 miles. Only 400 Amphicars are known to exist today with only 320 of them here in the U.S. It is the only mass produced amphibious automobile ever produced. Click here to view an interesting video and listen to a cold start.
1959 Cadillac DeVille
A private party seller says he has the “Best of the Best” of ’59 Caddies. He says his 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille is unrestored and original. Best of all he says it still has only 10k miles. “It’s just like driving it out of the showroom,” he wrote in his description. Kept in a heated garage he claims it has never been caught in the rain. “I don’t think you can find another car unrestored and looks almost like new,” he surmised. He says he has won awards for “Best Paint” at car shows when the paint is still original. Somebody please have us inspect it. We’d love to see this one.

Collector Cars with Low Miles
1984 Corvette
The 1984 Corvette was saddly misunderstood and greatly under-appreciated. The first C4 may just be a very highly sought after collector car some day however, because no one is collecting them now. How many do you think have survived? If they do find favor with collectors someday this will be the best one of all of them. Meet a 1984 Corvette being offered for sale at Fastlane Motorsports & Classic Cars in Addison, Illinois. Not only does it look great in the photos, they tell us it still has only 7,122 original miles. Check it out.
Here are more recent Low Miles additions:
1997 Lincoln Mark VIII LSC, Vanguard Motor Sales, MI, 9,021 original miles

Project Vehicles for Restoration
1920 Dodge Brothers Touring
The 1920 Dodge Brothers Touring car which you see here still looks great, although it has not run in some years. It is being offered for sale at Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. They specialize in finding cars that have been lost and forgotten in storage. This could be a great challenge for some skilled car guy who knows how to bring it back to life. In their description, Beverly Hills Car Club tells us it has comfortable cloth bench seats, and the overall car seems to be in good condition (verified by the photos.) The top will need to be replaced. Carefully turn the motor over and if it pops, this might be an easy restoration.
The following are just some of the cars available in the Project Car Section this week:

Deals of the Day
1979 Corvette
An interesting 1979 Corvette Coupe with T-tops has been listed for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles this week. It is finished in black with purple and red flames combined with a black interior. automatic transmission and has a V8 engine. You will note that the front spoiler needs to be replaced. With some custom touches, this Corvette may present in driver quality if repaired. The best way to know is to have it inspected before you buy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday because the asking price is $14,750. That’s a lotta’ car for the money.
1949 Chevy Coupe
Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois just posted a really sweet looking 1949 Chevy Custom Coupe with smooth custom bodywork and a powerful stance. It has a 216 ci inline 6 cylinder engine mated to a 3-speed manual gearbox. Interior is finished in tan (see photos.) And it comes with dual spotlights and dual Lake pipes, shaved doors and blue dot taillights. Click here for a walk-around video inspection and to hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $24,500.
1963 Ford Fairlane
Admittedlly this is a weird color for a car. But that might explain why the price is so right. Here is a 1963 Ford Fairlane in a color that might be described as lavender with a matching interior in a two-tone lavender/white combination. Look at the photos at the link, then click the video window to watch a walk-around inspection. You will notice some paint blemishes on the passenger door. They say it runs well and drives well. It is being represented as driver quality. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday because their asking price is $16,500.
1984 Chevrolet Suburban
Worldwide Vintage Auto is a large classic car clearing house in Denver. This week they listed this sharp looking 1984 Chevrolet Suburban. Looks real fresh doesn’t it? That is because it has only 37k miles, they tell us. And it has had only two owners. This is the way you want to find a Suburban. It comes with power steering, power brakes and a 350 small block motor. You should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry. It won’t last long. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. They are asking $18,900.
1983 Blakely Bernardi
In the era when neo-classic roadsters (i.e. Excaliburs, Zimmers, Tiffany’s, etc.) were becoming popular, the 1980’s saw a multitude of cars that were essentially backyard builds. One that is rare to find today is this 1983 Blakely Bernardi. It was recently posted for sale by Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, Illinois. They tell us these bodies were produced in a unique composite material from the factory. The Blakely was different in that it replicated a two-seater British sports car, but included elegant lines like a grand touring roadster. Click here for a full surround video display. Have this one inspected at Midwest’s shop in the Chicago area. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their asking price is $19,900.
1977 Cadillac Coupe
You know Cadillacs were made to run forever. But this 1977 Cadillac Coupe DeVille is something special. It comes from Casa Grande, Arizona and the seller says it is in “Incredible condition.” It is amazing the way these cars can thrive in the dry Arizona desert. The white/red interior holds up well (see photos.) It has the original Cadillac 425 ci V8 engine. Have it inspected so you get a complete set of detailed photos, but hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $7,995.
1977 MGB Convertible
The little 1977 MGB Roadster was a throwback to the early days of classic sports cars even when it was sold new in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Low to the ground, you got the feel and excitement of a sports roadster. It is for sale this week at Classic & Collectible Cars of Las Vegas. They say it has a 4-speed manual with overdrive, power brakes, alloy wheels, custom wood steering wheel, AM/FM radio, luggage rack, tonneau cover, and more. They term in a “Beautiful Quality Restoration.” That is key because their price is very attractive. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $15,500.
Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
