The Ultimate Sleeper

1969 Chevy Impala SS 427

Although the Chevrolet Impala was one of the most popular cars of all time, collectors are most enamored of the Super Sport version. After 1965 the Impala turned into a larger sedan sized car and sold very well at the Chevrolet dealerships. The Impala SS retained its performance image through 1968. For 1966 through 1968 there was a high performance SS 427 version of the Impala that really earned a lot of street credit. For a car that big it handled like it was on rails and the power was unrestrainable. But by 1969 sales tapered off for the Impala SS models. In fact, 1969 was the last year for the SS Impala. Luckily for collectors they only offered a Super Sport Impala as an SS 427 that year, increasing its collector value today.

This week we spotted a 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS 427 Convertible being listed by Legendary Motors in Rowley, Massachusetts. This is a rare citing and we knew we had to show it to you here in the newsletter. This particular example is featured in Azure Turquoise with Parchment interior and a white convertible top. The famed 427 ci L36 motor is factory rated at 390 hp producing 470 lb-ft of torque. The power transfers via a THM 400 bullet-proof 3-speed automatic transmission with a 12-bolt posi rear end putting the power to the ground. To withstand the high torque of the engine, the THM has the cast iron center support and over-sized second gear clutch . The Impala also came with a special suspension called F40, which provided heavier front and rear shocks and springs with a larger anti-roll bar. Translation … it’s the ultimate sleeper. You would not expect that kind of performance from such a big car.

We know they only made 2,455 Super Sport Impalas during the entire production year for 1969. That total includes all three body styles, coupes, hardtops and convertibles. The exact number of convertible SS 427’s produced is not recorded. But we have heard experts estimate that there were only 300 built.

Click here to view detailed photos on the Legendary Motors’ ad page. They say the dual exhaust produces the rumble you’d expect from a 427 Super Sport.

Classic Car News This Week

New Ferrari

Ferrari unveiled their new Roma Spider model yesterday in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh during an exclusive event at the El Badi Palace. It shows an enticing modern day design that honors the classic styling lines of the 1960’s Ferraris. The Roma has never before been offered as a Spider with a soft top. Just like the Roma coupe, the Spider uses the 3855 cc turbo V8 and hooks up through an 8-speed DCT with incredibly fast shifts and smooth acceleration. When it was introduced it was voted the “Best Engine in the Past 20 Years.” In a continued software development from Ferrari, the engine uses Variable Boost Management providing a sound track of incomparable revs.

GAA Classic Auction

We are just a few weeks away from the beginning of a special GAA Classic Car Auction at the end of this month. Our newsletter readers know we have been promoting the liquidation auction of the Jerry Smith Collection at GAA Classics’ auction facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, March 30 and April 1, 2023. All of the cars are being offered at No Reserve including this 1952 Oldsmobile 98 Convertible which you see here. We believe this is the “sleeper” deal of the auction. Tastefully customized, every nut and bolt was replaced as it received a Trans Am subframe and a full set of power options. It just looks right as an old school custom, doesn’t it? Click here to see more of the No Reserve offerings at the GAA Classic Auction in Greensboro.

Barris’ Lincoln ‘Bugazzi’

One of George Barris’ many ventures into custom car production, the car he called the Bugazzi was built to higher standards than a Rolls-Royce but with a flare only Barris could pull off. This 1973 Lincoln Mark IV “Bugazzi” is one of 12 designed and built by George Barris’ Hollywood Coach Builders in the 1970s for his Hollywood clientele. They say only two of the 12 still exist today. You will note the PPG blend of Gold Pearl clear with Ice Pearl, and light tan pinstriping and a hand-painted graphic on the spare-tire cover fabricated from two Lincoln Continental decklids. Then take a look at the photos on their ad page. They say it has been well maintained with 60k original miles. You may remember it on display at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, California. It will forever be part of the legendary Barris legacy. Not many collections will have a center piece like this one.

1940 Packard 120 Hot Rod

Who would dare to make a hot rod out of a revered 1940 Packard 120? Well, a West Virginia seller has done it and isn’t apologizing for it either. In fact, he gave us a video walk-around tour of it to display in his ad. Click the video window above to view. Street rod satin black flat paint never looked so good. Check out the 468 BBC with Scott Shafiroff components and 2x4s. Then take it out for a video test drive. Smooth.

1961 Impala 409 Convertible

A private party seller in Connecticut had recently listed his highly desirable 1961 Chevrolet Impala 409/425 Convertible for sale in our Chevrolet Section online. It comes with a T10 4-speed. When he listed it originally he was asking $130,000. But just yesterday he dropped the price to $120,000.

Deals of the Day

1940 Ford Tudor

An interesting classic car was listed for sale this week by Haggle Me, the internet broker that represents its private owner. This is a 1940 Ford 2-Door Sedan being offered for sale in its original vintage condition. They tell us it runs and drives very well, a point that should not be overlooked. They also include that the paint and interior are very nice (you can verify that in the photos.) You should have it inspected before you buy to get a full picture of the condition class. They say it has the original Flathead V8 engine and 3-speed manual transmission. For an unrestored original this one presents well in the photos. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. The asking price is $21,500.

1931 Ford Model A Roadster

The question here with this 1931 Ford Model A Deluxe Roadster is whether it is a driver quality find or is it a project car which will need to be restored? Well, let’s take a look. The private party seller is from Bay Shore, New York. He says the roadster was restored in 1991, but then it may have gone right into storage. He says it has the original 4 cylinder engine and drivetrain in running condition. You should note that this car was restored using a fiberglass body finished in what looks like Washington Blue. It has a steel hood, fenders and running boards. A pre-purchase inspection might help you understand whether the car can be cosmetically updated. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $14,500.

1954 Ford Custom

A sweet 1954 Ford Custom presents well as a classic car with mild custom upgrades. It is being offered for sale this week at Primo Classics International in Lakeland, Florida. They tell us the restored 4-Door sedan has a 292 ci V8 motor, automatic transmission, Vintage cold air conditioning, power steering, power brakes and a tilt colum steering wheel. A car indeed that looks classic, but rides much better. In fact, they say it “drives amazing.” It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is $21,900.

1958 Studebaker Silver Hawk

This 1958 Studebaker Silver Hawk has been in the same family for 44 years. You can tell from the photos that this is no show car. Yet they say they drive it every summer. It still has just 76,000 miles. It has an automatic transmission and some patina (not extra charge.) Click the link to see more photos. There is lots of cosmetic clean up needed. But does it need a full restoration? It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. The asking price is $12,900.

1969 Chevy C20 Pickup

Although there is noticeable patina on this 1969 Chevrolet C20 Pickup, you may overlook it for how well it runs and drives. That is what the private party seller from Temecula, California tells us about his steady Chevy. With a 350 engine, 400 automatic transmission and new oak bed, it has some finer points. They seller says it also has new shocks, new brakes and has had the engine refreshed. With 84,500 miles, it is on its third owner from new. The paint is original with some touchups. You might want to have it inspected before you buy, but hurry. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. The asking price is $12,000.

2004 Pontiac GTO

You know these retro GTO’s were born to be collectible. So we were a little surprised to see a 2004 Pontiac GTO being offered for sale at such an affordable price. It might be the right time to pick one up and put it away as a “future collectible.” This one is being offered for sale at Showdown Auto in Fraser, Michigan. It has the 5.7L SFI V8 engine. Click this link to view a walk-around video and here it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY next week. Their asking price is $18,900.

1985 Nissan 300ZX

Here is another one from Showdown Auto in Fraser, Michigan. You must check this 1985 Nissan 300ZX out. They say it remains in “great condition.” These ZX cars are bound to be collectible, just like Corvettes. They were one of the prime sports cars of their day. They say this one runs and drives great. It comes with receipts and service records dating back 15 years. The pop up headlights work, and the interior shows well. Click here for a walk-around video inspection. It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $12,900.  Now that’s the way to buy a car that will appreciate in value in the future.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:
