Market Trends Today

What To Look For Next?

Have you noticed lately that some of the muscle cars you took for granted are now getting harder to find? We’ve been watching the trends and have noticed that 1964-1972 Chevy Novas, 1969-1970 Plymouth Road Runners and 1969 thru 1973 Mustang Mach 1’s are among a number of second tier muscle cars that are becoming scarce commodities in today’s collector car market. For years these cars took a back seat to Plymouth Cudas, Dodge Chargers and Challengers, Shelby Mustangs and big block Camaros. Now they are being bought up by market makers which makes them a little harder to find.

So we were thinking … what’s next? How do we get in on the next big thing before it happens? And we realized there are still some beautiful 1972 through 1974 Mopars to be had in this market. Today, for instance, Cruisin Classics in Columbus, Ohio just listed a 1974 Plymouth Road Runner GTX for sale. It looks pretty cherry in the photo above, don’t you agree? They tell us only 386 of these were built and very few with the Wimbledon Plaid interior that is found in this one.

This Road Runner GTX is a nicely optioned car with power disc brakes, power steering, rear defrost, remote mirror, tinted glass, factory tach, factory gauges and functioning factory air conditioning. Cruisin Classics says they have the photo album documenting the rotisserie restoration which was done on this car. The car is not all original. It has an NOM 440 motor and it has had a color change during the restoration. It does have a numbers matching 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with an 8 ¾ Chrysler posi rear end. All Road Runner GTX’s came with Torqueflites in ’74.

Happily, you can still buy these 1973 and 1974 Mopars at an affordable price. (Follow this link to review dozens of detailed photos and information. Some of the restoration photos are there also.) You will be impressed by the beautiful FE5 Rallye Red paint. And it really looks sharp, set off with those 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels. When you visit their ad page be sure to watch a full walk-around inspection video produced by Cruisin Classics.

Classic Car News This Week

Carlisle Auction

Carlisle Events is beginning to get their photos and auction inventory up on their website. Some of the cars they are offering at the Spring Carlisle Auction, April 20-21, 2023 are tantilizing. Here is a 1959 Cadillac DeVille with factory air conditioning. They tell us it is in incredible condition. It will be auctioned off during the Spring Carlisle Car Show and Swap Meet in Carlisle, Pennsylvania next month. Stay tuned to this newsletter for more of their inventory updates in the coming weeks.

I Want More Horsepower

Our readers know the name Hennessey, the famous Texas based hypercar manufacturer. Many of you have met John Hennessey at the Barrett-Jackson Auction or seen him on Jay Leno’s TV shows. They supercharge almost anything with wheels. This week they sent us a news release about their C8 Corvette design they call the H700. The Hennessey Corvette H700 package dials up the power on the base 420 bhp C8 to a whopping 708 bhp. That’s on paper. But they made it more visceral by producing a video of what their H700 would do against a stock C8 Corvette on the track. Click here to view the video. The H700 is in white. We think you’ll find it interesting.

1962 Porsche by Reutters

We noticed this rare and desirable 1962 Porsche 356 Pre-A 1500S which was built by the Reutters Werks. Yes, this is a highly sought after speedster seen here in its gorgeous color combination of Strawberry Red with a sand beige interior. It is being offered for sale by Beverly Hills Car Club in Los Angeles. The vehicle comes equipped with a 4-speed manual transmission, 1953 Flat 4-cylinder 1500 engine, dual carburetors, Telefunken radio, soft top, steel wheels and chrome hub caps. They say they have a Kardex of its history and it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. These are so hard to find in today’s market. Check all the photos at the link above.

Auctions

We have been promoting the GAA Classic Car Auction in Greensboro, North Carolina, set for March 30-April 1, 2023. This is a special auction offering a large private collection of very desirable collector cars and trucks. But this week we learned that the auction will also include a very discreet collection of automobilia and petrolinia as well. This is all part of the Jerry Smith Collection, and will be auctioned off in lots.

Gas Pumps

If you have been looking for some garage art to display your collection this is the auction you will want to watch online or attend. Of particular interest are the many lots of gas pumps which will be sold in sets of two each. You can bid online and they have a shipping company at the show with which you can contract to deliver the items to you. Some of the sets include these Shell Oil Company pumps you see here. And they also have Sunoco pumps, Skelly, Sinclair and more. There are also several sets of gas pump globes which are very popular. You won’t believe how many old gas station signs and reproduction signs are available in the collection also.

Pedal Cars

When you click thru the automobilia auction pages here, you will see many pedal cars available to bid on individually. There is also a sampling of wagons and interesting bicycles, including a motorized bike and a Schwinn Phantom. Smith’s diecast collection of NASCAR race cars and drag racing cars is exquisite. There are literally hundreds of them which will be sold in large lots. There is a very special collection of Bill Elliott diecasts and memorabilia. And there are auction lots which include children’s toy trucks. Both casual and professional toy collectors will want to look over this auction inventory. You don’t want to miss this. You are sure to find something of interest.

Neon Signs

We were really impressed with the number of neon signs all available at No Reserve. You have a great chance of picking up something at a good price. The assortment ranges from this Indian MotoCycles example to a Polly Gas neon that we’ve never seen before. You will even find gumball machines, arcade games and automobilia related furniture, such as a Cadillac automan and barber’s chairs. There is something here for everyone. And it is all being offered at No Reserve so you really have a chance at getting something this time. Click here to find out how to register.

1968 Shelby GT500 CR

What makes a high-end Eleanor type Mustang so valuable? Well, you have to look at how it was built, comparing the level of authenticity to the original Shelby items and the quality of the equipment used in the build. This 1968 Mustang Fastback was factory converted into a Shelby GT500 by Classic Recreations, a company that builds retro Mustangs. Now available for sale in the secondary market at Fast Lane Classic Cars in St Charles, Missouri, this one is shown here in a detailed video walk-around inspection. Click the video window above to view. You will notice the Paxton-style supercharger under the hood. Nice muscle car!

Collector Cars with Low Miles

1999 Plymouth Prowler

The first years of production for the Plymouth Prowler were automotive ecstacy for car buffs. They were a novelty in the new car market. Never before had an automotive manufacturer produced a factory street rod. The new car buying public really took to it in those early years of production. This 1999 Plymouth Prowler was produced as a special edition called the Mulholland Edition, paying homage to the classic cruising days on Mulholland Boulevard in Los Angeles. It is being offered for sale this week at Flemings Ultimate Garage in Rockville, Maryland. Amazingly, it has just 1,650 miles recorded. It comes Carfax Certified as a 2-owner car. They only made 457 Prowlers in this purple paint. Click the link for dozens of detailed photos.

Here are more recent Low Miles additions:

1987 Corvette from Los Angeles, CA, 33k miles

2001 GMC Sonoma EXT Cab from Virginia Beach, VA, 27k miles

1996 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible, Fast Lane Classic Cars, MO, 33k orig mi

1993 Corvette 40th Anniv Convt from New Bedford, MA, 26k miles

You’ll find these and hundreds more in our Low Miles Section online now.

Project Vehicles for Restoration

Dodge Challenger Project

So much work is already done on this pro touring muscle car! Pro Touring and Resto Mod cars continue to be the hot trend in the collector car market. After all, if you pay that much for a restoration you want to be able to drive them, right? So here is a project car, a 1973 Dodge Challenger which is in the process of being restored. As often happens, it was taken to this level and now the owner cannot seem to finish it. There is a lot to like here. He has made it a 1970 Challenger clone with correct front fenders, rear valance, grille, AMD R/T-Ralley hood, House of Kolor Pavo Purple paint and much more. There is a Magnum 408 stroker motor already built. The car comes with a clean title. Check the ad for a list of parts. The question is, “Can you finish it?”

1955 Chevy 3100 Stepside

An original Arizona classic pickup is much in demand in the collector car community. This classic custom 1955 Chevrolet 3100 Stepside is an award winning driven vehicle. It has been in Arizona all its life, says the seller. It is restored with only 3,000 miles since the redo, and has a long list of custom upgrades as you can see in the ad description. The seller was asking $79,900 for this beauty. But just this week he dropped the price to $69,900. Check the photos on this one.

Muscle Car Clones

Judge Tribute

A Cardinal Red 1970 Pontiac GTO is said to be a real GTO with Judge decals. You get the best of both worlds. It is being offered for sale at North Shore Classics in Mundelein, Illinois. This is a GTO Judge tribute which is powered by the YS Code 400 V8 engine, with a TH400 automatic transmission (which is original.) Significantly, it has a great suspension with lowering springs and drop spindles, boxed rear control arms and front and rear sway bars. Click here to view a walk-around video. They just dropped the price. It is now one of the best deals on the COL website

The following are more recently listed Muscle Car Clones:

Deals of the Day

1965 Buick Wildcat Convertible

You don’t find these for sale everyday, especially at this price point. This week a 1965 Buick Wildcat Convertible was listed by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. They say it remains very original, powered by a 425 ci V8 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. Note the flame red exterior and Ivory White vinly interior with power steering, power brakes, power windows, factory air conditioning and a power convertible top. This is a real “country club” muscle car, all the power and a lot of comfortable equipment as well. They say the engine and transmission perform as they should. Click here for an inspection video and hear it run. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Saturday. Their asking price is $24,950.

1937 Cadillac Series 60

Another top offering from Country Classic Cars in Illinois is this 1937 Cadillac Series 60 Sedan dressed in black with all the chrome accents. Powered by a Flathead V8, this Cadillac is well optioned and comes with dual spotlights and dual fender mounted spare tires. They say you could enjoy this car in its current original form. But it would also be a great candidate for a restoration or a classic custom rebuild. Although it looks very nice in the photos, they note some imperfections in the paint and the engine has an slight exhaust leak. But it is a Cadillac so it has credentials in the collector car market. Click this link to view a walk-around video. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Sunday. The asking price is $23,500.

1957 Mercury Montclair

We couldn’t resist bringing you this 1957 Mercury Montclair here in the DEAL of the DAY features. It is really a bit of a project car because it needs quite a bit of work to bring it to even driver quality. But the Hot pink over black color scheme screams at us to make it road worthy. Have it inspected before you buy to know what you are getting into. It currently has a 351 ci V8 motor and automatic transmission with floor mounted shifter instead of the original push button. While they say it does run and drive, you should be pretty handy with mechanical work to want to own this one. But the price is tempting. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Monday. The asking price is only $15,000.

1951 Buick Super

Beverly Hills Car Club is famous for cars they find lost in storage. Here is a Glenn Green 1951 Buick Super Sedan which they say runs and drives, and is “mechanically sound.” You can see from the photos that it needs rechromed bumpers and updates to the stainless. The vehicle comes equipped with an automatic transmission, steel wheels and whitewall tires. We suggest you have it inspected before you buy to find out what you are getting into. However the price will tempt you. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Tuesday. Their asking price is $12,750.

1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

In 1976 we thought this would be the last Cadillac Eldorado Convertible model produced. GM thought the liability risk was too great and discontinued them for many years. Collectors tried to corner the market on them. I used to sell them for six figures back in the day. But then it became apparent that they would not hold those lofty values. This 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible is black with a black soft top, and is being offered for sale through Blackhawk Motors in Gurnee, Illinois. What a desirable color combo. You need to have it inspected to know for sure, but it might be one of those special cars that go under the radar. It will be our DEAL of the DAY on Wednesday. Their asking price is only $15,490. Hurry on this one! This is why you read this newsletter.

1984 Pontiac Fiero SE

There has been a lot of activity on the little Pontiac Fiero sports cars recently. It just could be that collectors are buying up the good ones. This is a 1984 Pontiac Fiero SE being offered for sale at Collectible Motorcar of Atlanta in Marietta, Georgia. They say it is in nice condition, sure to “turn heads” wherever you go. It does have 88k miles on it, but it is an automatic which did not have the problems the manual transmissions did. You should have it inspected before you buy. But hurry! It will be our DEAL of the DAY later next week. The asking price is only $10,900.

1969 Datsun 2000

A 1969 Datsun 2000 Roadster is shown here in racing livery to make a point. When these early Datsuns were imported to the U.S. they were used in SCCA racing very successfully. This one is being offered for sale by Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois. (They seem to have cornered the market on discount priced classic cars this week.) They tell us the 2.0 Liter 4 cylinder motor has had a recent rebuild along with the 4-speed manual transmission and rear end. They say it runs well but needs brake service to make it roadworthy. It will be our DEAL of the DAY late next week if it lasts that long. Their asking price is $18,500.

Often there are more cars that deserve to be in the DEAL of the DAY than we can schedule for our front page feature. Here is a list of cars that just missed the cut for the DEAL of the DAY this week. Remember, you saw them here first:

1956 Cadillac Fleetwood$13,950Staunton, IL
1988 Pontiac Fiero$15,900S Daytona, FL
